What a transport order should contain

A transport order is the contract between whoever books the trip (shipper or forwarder) and the carrier. It should clearly identify the parties, the truck, loading and unloading places and times, the goods (description, packages, weight, LDM, ADR), the price and the payment terms.

For international carriage the order usually refers to the CMR Convention, which sets the carrier's liability. Extra clauses (included waiting time, penalties, no transshipment) must be written out, otherwise they don't apply.

Transport order vs CMR

The transport order is the contract; the CMR travels with the goods and proves collection and delivery. The details on the order (addresses, goods, weight, plates) should match the CMR exactly, or the customer may delay payment.

Payment terms

Most orders tie payment to receiving the invoice and the original CMR signed by the consignee. State the term in days and when it starts, so there's no argument when it's time to get paid.

Frequently asked questions

Is a written transport order required?

A contract of carriage can be agreed in other ways, but a written order accepted by the carrier is the simplest proof of the agreed price and conditions.

Who signs the transport order?

The client issues and signs it; the carrier signs and stamps it to accept, usually before loading.

Can a forwarder use this template?

Yes. The forwarder enters its own details as the client and the haulier that actually runs the trip as the carrier.

Is my data stored on the truckTMS server?
