What goes into the cost per kilometre
Variable costs depend on distance: diesel, AdBlue, tyres, maintenance and tolls. Fixed costs are paid whether the truck moves or not: leasing or depreciation, insurance, the driver's total cost, allowances and overheads.
Cost per km = variable cost per km + annual fixed costs divided by annual kilometres. Empty kilometres and idle days make every paid kilometre more expensive.
Market reference
The CNR reference published by UNTRR (December 2022) for a long-haul 40 t truck: about EUR 0.64/km for the distance component (tolls included) and about EUR 187/day fixed, at roughly 108,000 km a year. Use it as a benchmark, not as your own figure.
Frequently asked questions
How do I price a trip?
Multiply the cost per km by total kilometres (loaded + empty), add trip-specific fees and apply your margin. The 'Trip quote' section does this automatically.
Why do empty kilometres matter?
They cost the same as loaded ones but are not invoiced. 15% empty running raises the cost per invoiced km by about 18%.
